Goodness
gracious. I was fourteen when I initially wrote this site, and it
kills me that anyone still references it (or me) in any way.
Here's the thing: I still actually believe in the term as I originally
defined it, as it's been defined by numerous writers again and
again. For me, it was simply a way to describe an emotional
connection to your characters; I still feel these connections, and I
think most writers do, honestly. The present definition seems
more in line with people who live in multiple systems, wherein one body
is occupied by numerous spirits. That's fine, but that definition
has no relationship to my way of thinking, and I became angry when
certain people in the 'community' (sweet Jesus) expected me to act as
some kind of leader or speaker for the whole & then chastised me
quite severely when I was not comfortable with doing so. That
expectation was the source of my vitriol at the time, especially
because the term honestly was--and still is--being appropriated by
people who believe that they're married to Sephiroth or Snape or
whatever. Which, again, great: if you want to marry Snape on the
astral plane, totally your business. But, again, AT THAT TIME, I
was expected to accept that practice as part of my soulbonding
definition. I don't accept it; not then, or now.
Presently, the term has
gathered so much moss that it honestly has no reference point back to
what I originally wrote, which is great, because it relieves the
pressure from me. But people are STILL LINKING to this ancient
site, when nothing here is recent or relevant--it hasn't been for
almost ten years (I think I was eighteen when I wrote that inflammatory
revision). While I still have my own view of the term, I don't
begrudge anyone else's view--and the reason I did at the time was
because of unfair external pressures being placed on me by folks who
had no right to do so.
